STIIMA-CNR is the Institute of Intelligent Industrial Technologies and Systems for Advanced Manufacturing of the National Research Council of Italy. STIIMA-CNR’s mission is to perform strategic activities of Scientific Research and Technological Development for the competitiveness and sustainability of the Italian and European manufacturing companies. The Institute employs 112 people developing and deploying new and advanced enabling technologies, tools and methodologies for the innovation of the manufacturing factories and their business models, production processes, machineries, and skills. STIIMA-CNR promotes the implementation of pilot plants that support further research activities and advanced education through the paradigm of the teaching factory. The Institute has several laboratories dedicated to research in the fields of Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Robotics, Micro-manufacturing, and De-manufacturing.
In the field of AR/VR/MR, STIIMA-CNR is active since 1995 and develops (and deploys) libraries, tools and interfaces for the implementation of collaborative virtual environments and their use applied to the factory (and its life cycle) in most of the manufacturing sectors, and other sectors as healthcare, aeronautics and smart city. The research activities are performed in tight collaboration with industrial enterprises, universities, research centers and public institutions, with also a patent of AR system for representation of customised shoes. The technology implementation is guided by training programmes for both companies and schools on AR/VR/MR tools and required skills, and also focuses on the evaluation of the user acceptability, including human psychological state (perception, attention, cognition, etc.) and emotional state (anxiety, boredom, etc.).
